What can I expect the first time?

The initial examination can take up to 2 hours.  You will be asked questions about your medical history, family history, lifestyle, how your various systems function e.g. sleep, appetite, bowels etc. and your present condition.  A physical examination will include blood pressure measurements and structural examination. This information is essential for diagnosis and to create an individualised treatment.  If time allows, you may also have your first treatment.

Subsequent treatments

The pulses on both hands will be taken several times throughout the session.  These pulses (6 on each wrist) provide information on the state of energy in each of the 12 meridians.

The tongue provides some excellent diagnostic information and you will be asked to show your tongue on each visit.  The tongue's shape, colour, coating and texture provide vital information on the state of the patient.

Treatment may involve any or all of the following:-

Acupuncture

bullet

is the insertion of very fine needles into acupuncture points.  All needles used are the finest quality sterilised disposable needles.

Moxibustion

bullet

is the application of warmth by the burning of a herb called moxa, over the acupuncture point.

Gua Sha

bullet

Gua Sha is a technique used to remove blood stagnation that blocks the surface tissues impeding organ and immune function

Cupping

bullet

This is used to treat stagnation and cold.  A vacuum is created inside a plastic cup by a suction pump, the cup then adheres to the skin's surface

Lifestyle

bullet

specific suggestions regarding your lifestyle may be made in order to help treatment e.g. dietary changes, water consumption.

Do I have to prepare in any way?

Please do not eat a heavy meal for two hours before or after treatment.  No alcohol should be consumed on the day of treatment.  Try to arrive in a relaxed and unhurried state. Allow yourself to take things easy for at least 2 hours after treatment.

On your first visit, it would be helpful if you could refrain from wearing perfume or cologne and for ladies not to wear skin foundation or eye shadow.

Please switch off your mobile phone during treatment.

Responses to treatment

Every individual is unique, so the responses to treatment vary from person to person. For some the initial improvements are in the overall state of health, followed by an improvement in the main complaint.  Others may notice a marked improvement in their main complaint straight away.

Some people will feel re-vitalised mentally or physically whilst others find the changes are more subtle and noticed in retrospect.  Typically, the longer a condition has been present, the greater the number of treatments that will be required.

Number and frequency of treatments

Most people will need treatment once or twice during the first week and then once a week thereafter until some improvement has been maintained.  The treatments will be gradually spaced further and further apart until there is only a need for a check up appointment every three months.  Some people will only need a few treatments whilst others will require many treatments.
